Got a stump left in the lawn, beside a fence or where you want to plant? We grind tree stumps below ground level across North Yorkshire and County Durham.
Send a photo, the approximate stump width and the narrowest access point. We’ll check whether the grinder can reach it and confirm the price.
You don’t need to have used us for the tree removal. If another contractor took the tree down and left the stump, we’ll sort it.
What stump grinding includes
- Domestic stump grinding
- Garden stumps in a wide range of sizes, subject to suitable machine access.
- Access clearance
- Stumps blocking driveways, paths, fence lines or areas that need levelling.
- Ground preparation
- Grinding to an agreed depth below ground level. Tell us if you plan to plant, turf or landscape the area so we can explain any further preparation needed.
- Waste removal
- Wood chip removed unless you want it left as mulch. Your choice.
The quote depends on the stump size, how many stumps need grinding, access for the machine, root spread and whether you want the wood chip taken away or left as mulch. We confirm the price in writing before work starts.
How stump grinding works
- Check. We confirm the stump location, size and access, and check for underground services where necessary.
- Grind. The machine grinds the stump below ground level. The time required depends on its size, species, roots and access.
- Clear. Wood chip removed or left as mulch. Ground raked level. Done.
Tree stump removal
We grind stumps across County Durham and North Yorkshire, including Durham, Chester-le-Street, Consett, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. Larger hardwood stumps, multiple stumps, or stumps in awkward access positions are quoted individually, and we quote for all stumps on the site before work starts.
What's not included
Stump grinding covers the stump and the ground immediately around it. Tree removal is a service we also provide, quoted separately. See our tree removal page. We don’t grind over underground services until their location has been confirmed. Any additional excavation is assessed and quoted separately.

How much does stump removal cost?
The quote depends on the stump size, species, roots, access and how many stumps are on the site. We confirm it in writing before work starts.
Do you remove the roots as well?
We grind the main root mass below ground level. Surface roots can be chased and ground if needed. Once the main stump is gone, the remaining roots decay naturally.
Can you grind stumps on a slope or bank?
Yes. The machine handles moderate inclines. Very steep banks may require additional setup. We’ll tell you during the site check.
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily. As long as we can access the stump, we can do the work. We’ll confirm arrangements when you book.
